my mentor, a friend and a big brother

  • Sheka Mansaray is a person who has been my mentor, a friend and a big brother to me. He has done a lot of things that makes him a hero like been an author of two books called “My father’s Tears” and “Desert Rose”. He is a person who is always ready to help when you are in need and encouraging you to go for what you believe in and what you think is right and never ever regret the things you d o even if it is bad because it makes you grow as a person and also we are not perfect so we will make mistakes. As a Community Advisor, he makes sure that all the residence on his floor are doing well and also makes sure his tasks are done on time. He also makes sure that they are involved in a campus activities and floor activities as well. Most people that I talk to says that he is someone who cares about people and always try to make new friends and smiles at everyone he sees. He is also the one of the founders of voice and vision which is an organization that put on shows about poetry, music and dances.

As a president of the African Student Association, he was someone who was on top of things by making sure his board members were doing things properly, putting together an agenda for Friday meetings, talking to members to see what can be done to make the organization great and making sure “African Night” which is an event the organization put on every year is a great success and something that people will talk about for years. The year that I went to that event it was a wonderful and great experience because the place was packed and the performances were phenomenal. The theme was “African you never see” and the other was based on South Africa because of the World Cup. Lot countries such displayed a dance or poetry about their nation and he did a poem form his book “Desert Rose” called “Africa “which talked about how people live and the things they do to make the continent unique .

Sheka is someone who is not afraid to go for a higher position or a go for a higher success. He is constantly writing poems and writing about friends and his surroundings. He is also someone who can just write things from his head and it will great and inspiring to others. The time that I have spent with him, I have learnt that there is no limit to your success, whatever opportunity you get, take it and do something great from it and something that will help a community or a nation in general. He is always talking about how fortunate he is to be able to in a country where you can go places freely and do things freely because back home in Sierra Leone, it is difficult to do things because of the civil war that was going on and the violence that he could not understand because he was a kid. He was leader of the year for the African American diversity group which is awarded every year to the person who combined his studies with activities on campus and also showed leadership in everything that they do.

Everyone I talk to always say good things about him and how he makes them feel at home when they first came to Mankato State University. He is someone who is compassionate about teaching children and encouraging people to go for their interests and help people who are struggling because that will make you a better person. He is someone who makes you laugh and forget about your problems and also knows whenever something is wrong by how you act and how you respond when he talks to you.

Sheka Mansaray will always be my hero because he has taught me a lot of things and has made me understand that there is no limit to success so do your best to be someone great and remember to help people along the way.
